USB memory sticks are today one of the most popular ways of storing files. That's because they are cheap, they have a small size and their capacity continues to grow more and more. Unfortunately, despite their huge popularity, USB sticks are not so reliable, as the data stored on them may get corrupted. The same goes for hard disks. It would be good if one could verify if a file stored on the hard disk or USB drive remains the same in every way, not just the size, but also the integrity of the file. A program that can do this is FastSum. As the name suggests, the program can quickly verify the checksum of any file or folder, thus allowing the user to see if the file or folder is actually the same or it was changed or corrupted. Checksum is most frequently used for checking the integrity of a file.

The software has a straightforward installation process that gets the job done in matter of seconds. It supports running on any version of Microsoft Windows and takes up about 4 MB of hard disk space.

The functionality of FastSum is based on a step by step wizard, for creating a file checksum and also for verifying them. Using the classical menu or the graphical buttons displayed in the interface, the user can create a checksum file for any file or folder. It can include or exclude certain files from creating a checksum. After this wizard is complete, every file will have a checksum file created next to it. This file can be used at any time by FastSum for checking if the file is the same as the original one, for example after it was copied to a memory drive or to another hard disk. This way, the user will always know if the file is corrupted or not.

The software features a lot of settings for configuring its functionality, but many of them should only be used by advanced users because setting the wrong option may cause the program to malfunction.

Pros

It features a step by step wizard for creating checksum files for any file or folder and a wizard for verifying them, allowing the user to be sure if the files and folders are corrupted or not.

Cons

The large number of advanced settings may be confusing for a beginner. The options are not thoroughly explained in the program's manual. FastSum is a very useful program for creating checksum files for any file and folder, making sure if they are corrupted or not.
